August 15th update

Bennett has had some more good days. He has been having baseball practice everyday which he loves.  Their first game is Monday at home.

Bennett had a couple friends over tonight to camp out after baseball practice.  Hamilton has a couple friends over to camp out in another tent. There is almost enough of them to have a baseball team.  They have been playing wiffle ball and hide and go seek together.  Sid grilled hamburgers and brats for them.   It’s about time for fall!   They have been making smores too.

Sid is out playing basketball with all the boys in the pole barn on a small basketball goal.  Sid must be feeling better!  Thank you God for answered prayers.  He is done with his antibiotics and will do a blood test next Friday to verify that the rocky mountain spotted fever is gone.

Grandpa Sidney is better too.  He got his cast off his ankle a couple days.  It’s sore some.  He still can’t walk on it as he is pretty weak from staying in his chair the last couple months.  We pray for his strength and the day he can walk around again.

It’s great to see Bennett playing and having Fun!  It may be a long night, not sure that Hamilton and his buddies will tough it out in the back yard.  Howl! Howl! Howl!

August 13th update

Bennett is doing good. He looks like he might of gained some weight, his color looks good and he just looks healthy! His hair is coming back in very pretty. LOL. It is a darker color than before and it is wavy in the back. His side burns are getting long. I asked him if he was going to get them cut? And he said, “No way, I want to see how long my hair will grow.” He may have shaggy long hair one of these days! He always did though like his hair longer.

He has had baseball practice every day this week for about 2 1/2 hours. Bennett loves it, he wishes they would practice twice a day. Today he went to the hitting zone and asked the instructor to work with him on pitching besides his hitting. Bennett is wanting to pitch some this school ball season.

Oh, we feel so blessed and fortunate! God is good!

Bennett took 13 chemo (methotrexate) pills yesterday (every Tuesday) and takes 6mp chemo pills daily. We are praying that these pills and his monthly iv treatment of vincristine keeps the leukemia away! We pray with God’s will that Bennett will be in remission forever!

“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for in Yah, the Lord, is everlasting strength.” Isaiah 26: 3-4

August 11th update

Bennett’s ANC is 1,416 from 1,050!!  Yeah!  We were so glad it went up with having chemotherapy the last two weeks.  I was worried since they did a nose dive last week from 3,000 to 1,000.   Now, we can breathe a little.  We will continue to pray that his bone marrow will make enough white blood cells to keep his ANC at a safe range.  His hemoglobin did drop to 10.4 from 11.0 and platelets are 197 from 161.

Bennett had Jr. High baseball practice tonight for two hours.  He did really good and felt good.  He wasn’t too tired afterwards!  This is an accomplishment!

Bennett camped out last night - ALL night in the tent by himself.  Hamilton got scared - (heard a coyote) and came in at bedtime.  Bennett enjoyed it and said it was fun.  He said the stars in the sky were beautiful and the cool weather was great.  I guess he really did like it as he is camping out there again tonight.

August 10th update

Bennett is feeling good.  We went to church today and this afternoon he has been riding the four wheeler and golf cart around.  Him and Hamilton went for a golf cart ride together.  The weather is beautiful.  They have been playing wiffle ball and football outside.

Bennett put together a tent and put it in the back yard.  Him and Hamilton are going to camp out tonight in the very back yard.  We have bets going if they end up chickening out and come in the house.

We go in the morning to our local hospital for a blood test.  We are praying that his counts are still good especially that his ANC is at least 1,000.

August 8th update

Bennett is doing great! With only a a week or so left of summer he is enjoying every minute. He went with Grandpa/ma J. yesterday to Chuckie Cheese and miniature golf. Grandpa thought he would win but Bennett did, I think Grandma and Hamilton tied for 2nd. Last night, we went to a miner’s game in Marion. Bennett enjoys going, it was a beautiful evening and the Miner’s won.  Below is a pic or two.

Today, Bennett had Jr. High baseball tryouts and made the team.  They start practice Monday evening and the first game is next Monday.  They have about 19 games in about a 6 weeks which means 2 to 4 games a week and none on the weekend.   Bennett is so looking forward to playing.  We are praying that his counts stay good and he feels good so he can go to school and play ball!

He is spending the night with a friend tonight so he has had a fun filled last couple weeks!   We are so thankful and appreciative of that.

May God bless you and your family.

August 6th update

Bennett is doing good.  He has been keeping busy this week.  He went to the hitting zone yesterday.  Today, I took the day off work and we went to the mall in Carbondale.   We also saw a movie; Step Brothers.  Bennett liked the movie,  too much fowl language for me but it was funny.

Bennett has been playing wiffle ball outside with Hamilton every night.  They come in both very sweating.  Bennett doesn’t seem to get worn out or too tired.  I am glad he wants to and feels up to it.  It will help him when he starts school baseball endure the heat.

Bennett can’t wait for school.  He is probably one of the very few kids that is ready to go.  We are hoping and praying that he can go everyday and keep up with the school work.

August 4th update

Bennett’s ANC today was 1,050 from 3,190. Hmm, not sure if it’s coming down from the elevated ANC from the neupogen shots because I doubt that one week’s of chemo has dropped it this much. He had 2.5 WBC and 42 neutrophils. Now, we are going to be anxious to check it on next Monday to see if it will stay steady or drop more. It’s better if it’s around 1,000 to help keep infection/fevers away plus it has to be at least 750 to continue chemo. His hemoglobin was 11.0 from 11.7 and platelets were 161 from 197.

We went to a miner’s baseball game tonight in Marion. We left in the 9th inning but we were losing 3 to 9. We took my Dad and Mom. The boys had fun! We couldn’t believe that it wasn’t extremely hot, it actually was pleasant. below is a pic or two:

Sid brought home an armadila that he found on the road dead today near where he was working in Anna. I’m not kidding, here is a picture of it. He has seen many animals working in the woods but this just blew him away. Pretty weird. The boys thought it was cool.

August 3rd update

Bennett is doing good.  We went to church today and than went to the movies to see Dark Knight, Batman!   It was great to go to the movies as we haven’t been in a very long time because of Bennett’s counts being low and usually having a baseball game.  He thought the movie was okay, pretty long.

We go in the morning to our local hospital for a CBC test.  We are anxious to see if his counts are still at a good number.  He has still been taking pepcid because of heartburn.  He takes the 6mp chemo pill nightly.  2 pills through the week and 3 on the weekend.  He can’t eat before or after the pill for a couple hours and not to drink milk/citrus.

Sid is doing better, he doesn’t feel as weak and tired.  Grandpa Sidney is doing okay, he is getting so bored of having to stay in the house. His cast for his ankle is heavy so he has to maneuver around in a wheelchair.  Please pray for God’s healing for the three Sidney Bennett Page’s.  (Sidney, Sid, and Bennett).  Thank you for checking in and May God bless you/your family!

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

The Benton Evening News

We Can All Draw Inspiration From

Bennett Page

Bennett Page

By Phil Knapper
Benton Evening News

Benton, Ill. -Before you read any further, you can go ahead and file this column under the “Life Isn’t Fair” category.

On a day when his biggest concern should have been if he got that special gift he asked for, Bennett Page was given a big, fat reality check. When he should have been asking for seconds on cake and ice cream, Page was asking a doctor what his chances were for survival.

On February 20, 2007 — Page’s 13th birthday — he was diagnosed with leukemia.
If you don’t know what leukemia is, it’s a form of cancer in the blood that attacks the good cells and kills them. People with leukemia are at high risk for infection and disease.

As he entered his teens, Page was learning about cell counts and chemotherapy, while others his age were busy with cell phones and Myspace. Fast forward a year and-a-half later and Page is in remission and is ready for anything.

But this hasn’t been an easy 18 months. After initially seeing a doctor when flu-like symptoms just would not go away, Page’s routine has included bone marrow biopsys, chemotherapy and lots and lots of visits to the doctor.

“I got sick sometimes after the chemo,” Page said. “And sometimes I felt fine … but there were a lot of times I just wanted to lay in bed with the television off and sleep all day.”
That is quite a contrast from Page’s life before he was diagnosed. But, when he could, he was out living life to the fullest.

“If he’s got 30 minutes or an hour where he is feeling good he gets after it,” his mom Cindy said. “He does as much as he can.”

Right now, Page is in the maintenance phase and he has two more years of treatment to go. A part of the treatment can be done at home, which is comforting. Except for a stay in the hospital from July 8-16, things are kind of getting back to normal as school is set to begin.

“Right now I’m taking chemo and steroid pills and I go to the hospital once a month for additional chemotherapy,” Page said.

“It’s been a tough time, but our family, friends, and our faith in God has carried us through,” Cindy said. “Bennett is a remarkable young man.”

Bennett is the son of Sid III and Cindy Page. His grandparents are Sid Jr. and Jane Page and Glen and Carolyn Johnston. He has a brother, Hamilton, too.

His progression was never more evident than last Friday night, when he played an entire baseball game for the first time in many moons. Benton’s pony team lost the game, but Page was pumped about the experience.

“It made me feel pretty good,” he said. “I was surprised that I was getting to play the whole game.”

Page didn’t know about the start at first base until he got to the game and looked at the board to see who was playing.

“It has been hard having to just sit and watch everyone else play, so it was great,” said Page. “And I got several assists, two unassisted outs and two singles.”

But, even though Page is on the road to recovery, he still has to watch what he does.
“I’m careful about what I do,” he said. “I stay at home when I have really low counts but, when I can, I still go and do stuff 110 percent.

“I play basketball and baseball,” he continued. “And I still fish and hunt. For the rest of this summer I’m going to Miners games, having friends over and getting ready for eighth grade baseball season.”

So, life is normal again, right?

“That’s hard to say,” said Page. “From then to now, I’m not sure how I can compare … a lot of things have changed so much. It’s hard to say what normal is.

“But I’ve learned a lot,” he continued. “I’ve learned not to take things for granted, I’ve learned to do the best I can and to not be lazy, and I’ve learned you have to make everything you can out of the things in your life.”

There is a website dedicated to Page’s story and his recovery — www.bennettpage.org — you can keep track of his progress and give words of encouragement on the site.
But maybe the best thing you can do for Bennett Page is treat him like any other 14-year old kid … ‘cause that’s what he is, a kid that has had to grow up way too fast under difficult conditions.

That’s exactly what I tried to do when I sat down with him one-on-one for an interview this week and I’m so glad we were able to schedule some time to meet around his trip to King’s Island.

Because getting to know kids like Bennett Page is why I love my job.

August 1st update

Can you believe it’s August already? School is around the corner starting Aug. 19th.

Bennett got home last night around midnight. He is glad to be home. He looks so good. He hasn’t been tired at all. He was able to sleep in; while he was gone which helped him to get plenty of sleep. He had a blast at Kings Island and enjoyed the trip. Thanks to Tyler and his family for taking him!

He feels good today. He took his last dose of steroids tonight and doesn’t have to take any until later this month. He didn’t have heartburn this time as he took pepcid twice a day and this kept it away.

We all went to Hamilton’s vacation bible school program tonight. It was a good week for me helping and Hamilton is ready to go back next year.

We found out today, that Bennett’s Dad, Sid ( I say this because grandpa is Sid too) was diagnosed with rocky mountain spotted fever. This causes you to have a fever, nausea, severe headache, lack of appetite, diarrhea and fatigue. He has had all of the above symptoms off and on for the past 3 to 4 weeks plus shortness of breathe.

He works for a tree company and they trim trees around power lines. A couple weeks ago I would remove 4 to 5 ticks a night off of his body. The ticks were no bigger than a period (.) He had a blood test last Friday and it took until today to find out that he tested positive. Sid guessed this is what was wrong with him and went to the Dr. asking for the testing. He started taking antibiotics today and will repeat a blood test in about 10 days.

We are praying that these antibiotics get rid of it and he starts feeling better soon. Just like with any diseases this can be very serious if not caught and treated.

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27
