July 31st update

As we were driving home tonight from vacation bible school, Hamilton told me that they talked about stories that were true during story time. He said they talked about miracles. Miracles in the bible and also miracles that have happened in real life.

Hamilton said he wanted to speak up and tell of Bennett but he would stutter. Can you imagine?   Hamilton – speechless?  I asked him, “what about Bennett?” and he said, “his miracle.”  We talked about Bennett’s miracle of him beating his awful disease.  The miracle of him feeling well.  Hamilton said,  “yeah, the miracle of him feeling good and playing with me in the hospital.”  We thank God daily for Bennett’s miracle and God’s healing love.

Bennett is on his way home and it probably will be late. They stopped at Louisville Slugger Factory and played miniature golf. I can’t wait to see him and reassure myself that he is okay.

“You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.” Psalm 77:14

July 30th update

Bennett is having a blast at Kings Island! He is taking it all in. He used to be scared of rides and didn’t really enjoy them but now he is trying everything and having Fun. I am sure he will have tons of stories to tell us when he returns. Below are a couple pictures he sent me on his phone.  We can’t wait for him to be home tomorrow!

July 29th update

Bennett is doing good. Actually he is doing Great! He feels good and has pinkish cheeks again. He left today to go to Kings Island in Cincinnatti with one of his friends and his family. He won’t be back until Thursday. He promises me that he will take his medicine, use hand sanitizer constantly, and sunscreen. We are thankful that it worked out for him to go.

Please pray for Bennett’s safe travels and that he doesn’t have any more fevers/infections.

July 28th update

Bennett’s Dr. appt went good this morning. Everyone commented on how good he looked and how much his hair has grown. The Dr. assured us that everything was fine and his maintenance therapy should go much smoother. She completed a sports school physical for him today and cleared him for playing baseball and basketball. His ankle hasn’t bothered him anymore. He weighed 124 pounds.

His spinal tap with chemo went good. He received an iv push of vincristine. I bragged to all the nurses/Dr. about his baseball game Friday night. They were really impressed and happy for him! We mentioned that he doesn’t run as fast as he used to and Dr. indicated that the vincristine he gets monthly has alot to do with that and it eventually will get better.

We had been with almost a month without any chemo pills and today he began taking steroids twice a day for five days. Also, he has to take 6mp pills daily. He also got his pentamadine breathing treatment today to prevent pneumonia.

The boys had a great day. We went to the paddle boats at Forest Park, boy, was that a work out. We went to St. Louis Mills mall to do glow in the dark goofy golf and also went to the raceway speedway. Below are a couple pics of racing, rock climbing, and jumping on the trampoline. It was nice not having ball games plus being out and about! Praises and Thankful to God!

July 27th update

We went and did blood work this morning. Bennett’s ANC is 3,190!! Yeah! It has been three days since he has a shot so this should be his real numbers. His WBC was 5.8 and he had 55 neutrophils. Hemoglobin is 11.7 and platelets are 197. All great numbers!

We are packing up and getting ready to go to Fairview Heights to go to the movies and to a gateway grizzlies baseball game. We will spend the night since we have to be at the Dr. in St Louis at 8:30. Hamilton is going with Bennett and I.

Bennett will have a spinal tap with chemo injected into his spine so he will be sedated for that. He will receive an iv push of the chemo vincristine plus start taking steroids for five days and the 6mp pill daily. It has been since June 30th since Bennett has had any chemo. We are praying not having any chemo hasn’t activated his leukemia.

Bennett and Hamilton at the Gateway Grizzlies baseball game in Sauget, IL. It was pretty hot at first. It was different and neat to see but we like the So IL Minor games better. They both are in the Frontier League. We went to the Minors game Saturday night as a family, it was fun. I think we have been at the ball field enough this summer! LOL, the boys love it.

July 25th update

Who’s that Benton Ranger #35? BENNETT PAGE!! Bennett started the game and played 1st base tonight and did an awesome job! He made several outs that were assisted and he caught a fly ball and had an unassisted out. The batter hit a grounder that looked like the ball was going foul but didn’t; Bennett ran and got it and tagged the batter out. Here is the big guy running as fast as he can and Bennett stops him by tagging him. He said, he had both hands on the ball to make sure he didn’t lose the ball. He batted three times and had two awesome hits. The two hits went past the infield but before the outfield, in the holes!! Bennett scored the first run and he was the 8th batter.

Unfortunately the team lost the game 3 to 5 against Nashville. The season is over for the summer. But school ball will be starting in a couple weeks and Bennett can’t wait to play! Thanks to the coaches for allowing Bennett to end on a high note, it gave him more confidence and a huge morale booster!!

July 24th update

Bennett’s doing good.  We went to lunch today together.  One day this week, he had lunch ready for me at home, making hamburgers.  He got his last shot today.  We are sure hoping/praying that these shots really boosted his bone marrow and that his anc will be good on Sunday.

His baseball team lost tonight against Mt Vernon.  We were up 9 to 2 until the 7th inning and they scored 9 runs in that inning beating us by 2.  Bennett batted once and got a walk.  We play tomorrow night at 6:00 against Nashville, if we win, we play again at 8.  The tournament is double elimination.

We are thankful Bennett is feeling so good.  He is getting antsy, he wants to play ball and he is getting tired of hanging out at home by himself.  I know he doesn’t feel like he has had much of summer.  We have to be appreciative for what we do have and that he’s not in the hospital. We are counting our blessings and praising God for them!

July 23rd update

Bennett’s ANC today is 26,010. What? Unheard of, huh? His WBC are 30 and he had 85 neutrophils. His numbers are inflated because of the neupogen shots so they are working; this is what the Dr. wanted. The Dr. wants him to continue with two more shots so a total of 4 for the week. He got a shot this afternoon and he will get another one tomorrow. Hopefully this will do the trick. Dr. has decided to do treatment on Monday after we check our counts Sunday at our local hospital to make sure his ANC is 750 or higher. His hemoglobin was 10.5 from 10.3 and platelets are 247 from 243.

Bennett is feeling great. He went to hitting zone today and than had batting practice tonight. He has been playing football with Hamilton outside this afternoon and evening.

Thank you for checking in on Bennett. We hope he is on the road to recovering indefinitely.

July 22nd update

Bennett is doing good.  He rested most of the morning since we got home late from the ball game.  Him and Hamilton played some this afternoon.  He had a ball game tonight for the region tournament in Carbondale.  We won by 2 runs against Carbondale.  Bennett batted once and struck out.  He really does the best in the field.  We play Thursday night at 8 p.m. against Mt Vernon; this will be a tough game.

Bennett’s ankle hasn’t bothered him at all.  We are so thankful; it is doing great!  We go in the morning to our local hospital to check his ANC.  I’m not sure what number to hope for.  We are praying for God’s presence in his life, getting him through these low counts, and keeping him healthy.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God — what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2

July 21st update

Bennett’s ANC dropped today to 312 from 1,092 on Friday. He had 2.4 WBC from 4.2 and 13 neutrophils from 26.   The 312 from today though is sure better than the 54 and 78 that we had last week in the hospital. It takes some time and usually several neupogen shots for the ANC to stay.  Dr wanted to see if his ANC would stay around 1,000 or more before given him more shots.  Now, they know he needs them.

The Dr. ordered him today to have a neupogen shot today and tomorrow. We were lucky enough that are pharmacy here had the two shots so we didn’t have to drive to St Louis to get them. And our nurse friend Lori offered graciously to come over and give them to Bennett. Dr. wants us to check counts again on Wednesday (which we expect them to be higher from the shots).

She may want him to have his chemo treatment this Friday if she likes his ANC number on Wed.?  I would think he would need more than two days of shots before giving him chemo right on top of it?  Last Friday it was above 1,000 and dropped today pretty low without chemo.  I have expressed my concerns and this is where we have to trust the Dr.  I do know that she really wants him to get some chemo asap because he is going on 3 weeks now without any chemo to fight any leukemia cells hiding in his body.

His hemoglobin went up again to 10.3 from 9.8 and platelets went up to 243 from 156. This is Great! This is the highest these two blood counts have been for several months. So, his bone marrow is making some cells!

Bennett’s baseball team played tonight in their region tournament in Carbondale playing Nashville. Bennett got to bat once getting out on an infield fly ball. We won by the 10 run rule. Yeah! They play again tomorrow night at 8:00 against Carbondale.
