June 5th update

We had a much better Dr. visit and drive to St Louis.

The one thing that surprised me today is that his ANC has dropped even more. It is 224 which is very low.  Anything below 500 is a severe chance of getting an infection.

He received one chemo today (vincristine) through his port.

The Dr wanted us to wait to get back his CBC because she thought he looked pale but his hemoglobin was low but not enough for a transfusion.

He weighed 106. Dr. was concerned that he is still losing weight. She indicated that it is important that he tries to eat high calorie foods and gain some weight this week.

He is getting ready to start an intense chemo drug that will hospitalize him for at least 4 days next Tuesday. She said that he will be pretty sick from this and probably won’t be eating so he needed to get his strength/energy now.

The one thing that will delay this intense treatment is if his ANC doesn’t go up to 750 by Tues.

He did get sick on the way home but no tingling/numbness or rashes!  Yeah!

Thank you for lifting Bennett up in your prayers! God is listening!

Bennett, I have been watching your progress on your website and read that you need to maintain your weight and strength. I hope this will help.

White Foods! That is what my oncology nurse would say to me after treatment. Eat white foods. My mom would fix me potato cakes and I liked the mashed potatoes with cream cheese…the white gravy from the DQ that comes with the chicken strip basket. They will sell you just the gravy. I drank allot of milk with Ovaltine stirred into it.

Another thing I learned, do not eat foods you really really like, because if you get sick on them you won’t lime them so much.

I will contiue to pray for you just as your family did for me. I’ll be going for my six month check up soon.

You hang in there, you are a strong young man and YOU can “laugh in cancer’s face”.

Cindy, you may want to check out this website http://www.blochcancer.org. The book “Fighting Cancer” can be downloaded. I have some books I would gladly share with you. one that helped gave me the strength was Lance Armstrong’s story. With Bennett being an athlete he might enjoy the story.

Dear Liz, Bennett and I watched a show on the discovery health channel about living with cancer and Lance Armstrong was on it. Bennett said than that he would like to read his story. I had looked at a few book stores and hadn’t found it yet. Bennett would love it and I am always interested in reading something new! Thank you!

I will check out this website.

    Thanks for your expert advise!

    Hey Cindy and Bennett,

I have A Lance Armstrong book called “It’s Not About the Bike…My Journey Back to Life”. I just read Liz’s post and it was sitting on top of a stack of books from school. It is a great book. You can borrow it if you’d like….just let me know. Hang in there, Bennett!

Liz, I got the books, thanks for dropping them off so quick! I have already started looking at Lance Armstrong’s book, it looks really good. Bennett isn’t much of a reader but I thought I could read to him especially when his in the hospital!

I also stayed up last night until 1:00 a.m. reading through the website you directed me to. I called today for the books they have available.
did you request the PDQ? I was interested in the information that might have available on the study that Bennett’s in. I plan on calling.

Thanks again for the knowledgable information!

    Hey Bennett,

It was good to see you at the game Thursday. I had fun on our motorcycle ride, it just was not long enough. When the weather gets a little cooler we will take the longer trip that we talked about. Sounds like you had a great time in your pool, nothing like a pool when it is good and hot! Now that you have went to Boomland I will take your Mom’s advice and steer clear the roads around your house for a few weeks. Save some fireworks for your Grandpa’s cookout and fireworks show.

    Uncle Ron
