May 1st update

10:30 a.m. Cindy called me from St. Louis and asked me to post an update for today. She said Dr. Shenoy decided that Bennett needed to be admitted to the hospital because of his dehydration and not being able to keep anything down. They have started him on IV fluids are in the clinic waiting for a room to open on the 9-West floor to spend the night and maybe a couple of days. The doctor ordered a pancreas test to test for pancreatitis and ordered a CBC test. Cindy and Bennett are relieved that they are admitting him so that he can get back to feeling better.

1:00 p.m. From Cindy:   Bennett’s CBC test came back with his ANC at 242. (a little lower than yesterday).  Hemoglobin and platelets are good. Dr. also did an electrolytes test. Bennett’s enzymes are high but Dr. Shenoy was OK with this because it is probably caused by his weekly methtroxate doses in the spine. His bilirubin came back normal which is good.

The Dr. indicated that his urine is showing he was really dehydrated even though his electrolytes were good.

We have not heard back yet for the pancreas test.

Bennett is trying to sleep, doesn’t want to watch TV or do anything.

I went to visit one of our favorites nurses on 9 west and she said they were filled up and Bennett may have to be admitted to another floor. We are just waiting to hear.

3:00 update from Cindy:  Pancreas test came back normal. Dr. also has ordered a urine culture (to check for bacteria) that has been sent off but no results yet.

Bennett will be admitted to 8 west floor. We are waiting for a nurse to come and get him from that floor.  hopefully soon.

5:50 p.m. from Cindy:  Bennett finally got a room on the 8th floor West, room 48 about 4:00. We saw the Dr. and resident Dr on the floor plus met the 2 nurses. They are just keeping him on fluids. He has not ate or drank anything all day. Dr. said this is OK. He is too nausea to eat. When I  get dinner soon I will eat in the cafeteria because even the food smell, he believes will make him sick if I bring it back up to his room.

His room is an isolation room with sliding glass doors. Dr. and nurses have to put on a gown, mask and gloves before they enter his room. This is for his protection because his ANC is so low plus it’s for the protection of the other patients in case Bennett has some type of infection too.

The urine culture will not be back until tomorrow. They are waiting to see what grows in it to determine if he has any bacteria. They could tell though that he was dehydrated.

We are not sure how long he will be in the hospital. Depending of course of how he does, they do want him to be able to eat and drink and be hydrated before he is discharged.

Thank you for your daily prayers.
